Seen from the other side, blocks of expanded polystyrene are being fixed in position to form the ground dropping away from track level. The ground level will also rise towards the junction, with the main line in the far distance. Using lightweight polystyrene blocks to form the ground surface means that very little weight is carried on the outside of the layout.

A closer view of the coal drops under construction. The piers are blocks of wood cut to fit and clad in Wills 4mm-scale random stone sheet. The white square section styrene tube will form the beams that the rails will rest on – the length of track is a very temporary measure. As two point motors need to be concealed in the coal drops, the top part will be boarded in. The road surface is made up of oddments of Slater’s 7mm stonework, while the bases for the piles of coal are cut from highdensity foam packaging.
